The Portuguese Association for Victim Support (APAV) is a pioneering non-governmental organisation in Portugal, dedicated to providing comprehensive support to victims all of crime, their families, and friends. Established in 1990, APAV has been at the forefront of promoting victims’ rights and offering specialized services tailored to the needs of those affected by crime and violence.
APAV operates a national network of 83 community-based services which, staffed by trained professionals and volunteers, committed to offering empathetic, confidential, qualified and free of charge victim support services. The organization’s services encompass emotional support, psychological and social support, legal information and practical guidance, ensuring that victims receive holistic care tailored to their unique circumstances. APAV also provides specialized support for migrant people who are victims of hate crimes, trafficking, or exploitation; family and friends who lost someone to homicide; children and young victims of sexual violence; and elderly people who are victims of crime.
Beyond direct victim support, APAV is deeply involved in advocacy and public policy, working to influence legislation and policies that protect and empower victims. The organization collaborates with national and international partners to promote best practices in victim support and ensure that the voices of victims are heard in policymaking processes.
Education and training are also central to APAV’s mission. The organization offers a range of training programs for professionals, such as police officers, social workers, and healthcare providers, to enhance their ability to support victims effectively. Additionally, APAV engages in public awareness campaigns to educate the community about victims’ rights and the importance of a supportive, compassionate response to those in need.
