(Exclusive to VSE Members – Registration Required)

Café Martinho da Arcada, located in the iconic Praça do Comércio, no. 3, 1100-148 Lisbon, is a true Lisbon landmark. Founded in 1778 as a modest liquor shop, it was initially known as ‘Casa da Neve’. At the time, the owner, Julião Pereira de Castro, Chief Snowman of the Royal House, and his wife Policarmo, inaugurated the café with a fanfare and the lighting of oil lamps, creating a vibrant atmosphere that attracted court personalities and bourgeois, such as the poet Fernando Pessoa, who turned the café into a true literary space.

The café continues to be a landmark in Lisbon, celebrating its history and tradition while offering genuine Portuguese cuisine. With the preservation of its historical roots and a cosmopolitan atmosphere, Martinho da Arcada attracts visitors from all over the world. In 1999, it was voted the best café of the year by the ‘Guide to European Cafés’. Today, it continues to be a privileged place where history meets modernity, remaining a symbol of Lisbon and its rich cultural life.
